Ameriglo Night Sights

Anyone who carries a handgun for a living or has carried one into harms way before knows the importance of having a handgun that is not only reliable but can engage threats under any condition.  One condition under which most shooting incidences occur is night or reduced light.  One additional piece of equipment I insist is on every one of my defensive handguns is a good set of night sights.  Night sights allow the shooter to safely and effectively engage threats under low light conditions.

Most weapon manufacturers include night sights on their defensive handguns, but if you have a pistol without them, never fear, several companies produce good quality night sights that are easily mounted to your weapon.  Meprolight and Trijicon are two of the biggest hitters in the night sight game and I have carried both of these brands on duty pistols.  Another manufacturer of night sights is Ameriglo.  The majority of available models produced by Ameriglo are for the Glock pistol, but they do make models for other makes of handguns.   They make several models of night sights such as Classic Style, Smooth Slope and Ghost Ring.  I was in the process of building a custom Glock 19 and was in need of a good set of night sights.  I had never used this brand before but the company had a new model out that caught my attention.

The model that caught my attention is called Operator night sights.  There are a couple of features that make the Operator set different than most night sights on the market today.  Most night sights have a tritium insert with a white outline around the tritium portion.  The rear sight of the Operator is slightly different.  The tritium is friction fit into the CNC machined steel resulting in no white outline around the tritium.  The tritium does not glow during the day, of course, so what the shooter sees is a black sight with two small, green dots on the rear of it.  The front sight does have the traditional white outline.  This combination of no-outline rear and white outline front results in very quick target acquisition as it forces the shooter to focus more on the front sight.  This is a good thing!  At .125” thick the front sight of the Operator set is also slightly different in that it is thinner than most front sights.  It is thinner than most defensive sights but not as thin as target sights.  I like the thinner front sight because I can be a little more accurate in my shooting than I can with the standard thick front sight.  Even though the three dot system can be good for quick sight alignment, we should not use the three dots during daytime shooting.  Line up the top of the black portion of the sights as this will result in more accurate shot placement.  This another reason I like the no-outline rear sight.  But by all means, if you have to make a shot under stress, in low light, then use the dots.  That is what they are for!

Although Ameriglo offers sight sets in green and yellow, I opted for all green as the green dots are generally brighter than any other color.  I must say, I was very impressed with the brightness of my sights.  They seemed brighter than both the Trijicon and Meprolight sets I have used.

These sights are very well made, very bright and allow quick target acquisition in defensive situations and accurate shot placement for target shooting.  All-in-all I am very impressed with the Ameriglo Operator Night Sights.  Now, I will be checking to see if they make the Operator set for Sigs!
