The History of the SXT cartridge is a very bumpy one, in the late 80 they got a bad rep for having the Ranger SXT “aka Black Talon” this is the latest generation of that cartridge. When you first look at the bullet you notice that the hollow point cavity is smaller than the average hollow point on the market today. The Manufacturer states the ammo produces 990fps and 320 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle and 947fps and 293 ft lbs of energy at 25 yds.
The sheetrock test shows the ammo penetrated 10 layers of Sheetrock the equivalent of 5 interior walls, the downside was the ammo had no expansion at all. After closer examination of the ammo shows that the hollow point was clogged with sheetrock and that prevented it from expanding. This can happen with almost any hollow point, its just a matter of how the ammo is designed to expand. All ammo can be effective to an extent, it all depends on shot placement, its what the bullet does once it hits its target.
My Opinion. My only problem with this ammo is the expansion. All the claims of this ammo is up to par. If you were to miss your target in a home defense scenario, It would take 5 walls to stop this bullet. Once more testing scenarios become available I will retest this ammo. For now if a home defense situation then I would say I do not recommend this ammo.
