When I first took a look at this ammo, I thought it would just fly
through whatever it hit! I then looked at the Hollow point Cavity – it
is HUGE. The company website lists a velocity of 1075fps and
energy of 475ftlbs. In my book, that’s a lot. Of course, you’re
throwing a projectile the size of an ashtray at the target. I,
like the next person, want an ammo that will penetrate and get the job
done and that is exactly the claim of this ammo. DPX “provides
excellent expansion and penetration due to its solid copper
bullet.” Now, let’s see what it can do in the real world.
Water Test.
This test shows the “best case” scenario in expansion, with no major
obstructions so the hollow point cavity is not obstructed. Let me
tell you - after a few rounds, I really liked it, so I was eager to see
just what the final result would look like. (see picture) Every
round expands just as claimed. There was no sharp recoil, which I was
expecting from a +p round in a 4” 1911, but nothing out the
ordinary. In fact, I think the recoil was equal to the regular
rounds. In a defense scenario, that is good (a better chance at a
closer 2nd shot). No fail to feeds, no misfires. So far so good.

Chipped Tires test.
This test consists of Chipped Forklift tires (no steel belts) poured
into a tube, packed and capped off on both ends. The entry end is
capped with a 5/8” MDF board. This is just something for the bullet to
penetrate before it hits the tires. This test is just to test a
“worst case” scenario of penetration short of a steel plate. The
DPX did do well. In fact, it did the best out of all the ammo I
tested that day, penetrating 19 inches. The gelatin results posted by
Corbon range from 12” to 19”, so our experiment was on track with those
results. As far as expansion, there was almost none (see picture)
and after a little inspection, I found that it had a bit of rubber
packed into the cavity. Amazing that the difference between a
perfect expansion and none at all is just a small thing.

Impression.
This is a great round when you want to make sure you get through your
target. Is it a good defense round in an urban area? The jury is
still out on this one. I will find out more very soon with the
sheetrock test. I am not sure it would be good for home defense
or concealed carry, mainly due to the uncertainty of your surroundings
at that time. You have to think of things like that when you’re
carrying in an urban area. In the meantime, my opinion is this
would be a GREAT hunting round. If you hunt with a 45acp, whether
it be a rifle or a pistol, this is your ammo hands down!
