The Hornady TAP ammo was designed for Law Enforcement and Home Defense.
In this round Hornady, for years being synonymous with excellence, uses
their XTP bullet and a new nickel plated casing to eliminate the
potential for corrosion and improve feeding in firearms. The velocity
stated on the box is 950 fps at muzzle and 908fps at 50 yards.
The energy is 461 ftlbs at muzzle and 421 at 50 yards.
Water Test:
The test weapon was a Kimber Pro Eclipse. The ammo offered great
feeding and accuracy. I also liked that the flash was minimal
(though I did test during the day, I could tell a difference).
The water test provided a great look at the best case expansion in this
ammo. (see picture) It didn’t expand as much as I would have
hoped. I did notice that the jacket started to break apart. Keep
in mind that this is worst case.

Chipped Tires Test:
This test was to determine the penetration only, in worst case
scenario. My test showed the TAP ammo penetrated 12”, which is on par
with the 13” stated in ballistics gelatin. Upon inspection of the
unexpanded round, I found that pieces of the chipped tires had jammed
into the cavity, preventing the expansion of the round (see picture).
But once again, this is not a test of expansion, just penetration.

Sheetrock test:
Results coming soon.
My overall opinion of the ammo so far is that it’s a great round. I’m
not sure it’s a great round for home defense or Law Enforcement /
Military. My main concern with it is penetration. Mainly based on the
fact that this is a hunting bullet, they use the XTP bullet in the TAP
rounds. If you were using a 32acp with the XTP (which I do) I would say
it is ok, due to the 32 needing more penetration. As of right now, I’ll
stick to recommending this as a hunting round, or personal protection
when your surroundings are not an issue. I might change my mind
once the Sheetrock tests are in.

Check back soon.
